Teach Your Children Well

Here were are close to hearing a Grand Jury decision about whether or not Officer Warren will be charged in the death of Michael Brown, and in the same sitting I am reading that President Obama met with Ferguson protestors who are preplanning a protest against the ruling.

Some of the national leaders met with President Obama on Nov. 5 for a gathering that included a conversation about Ferguson.

According to the Rev. Al Sharpton, who has appeared frequently in St. Louis with the Brown family and delivered a speech at Mr. Brown’s funeral, Mr. Obama “was concerned about Ferguson staying on course in terms of pursuing what it was that he knew we were advocating. He said he hopes that we’re doing all we can to keep peace.”

My thinking is, that instead of talking about protests, the President and members of the black community could take the opportunity to talk about how to prevent this type of incident in the future.

Here are 10 things that I think might have helped to avoid the whole messy situation in Ferguson, including the death of Michael Brown.

  1. Michael Brown could have paid for the cigars rather than stealing them.
  2. Michael Brown could have apologized to the store owner for stealing cigars rather than assaulting him.
  3. Michael Brown could have walked on the sidewalk rather than in the street
  4. Michael Brown could have moved to the sidewalk when asked to do so by Officer Warren instead of continuing to walk in the street.
  5. When speaking to Officer Warren, Michael Brown could have apologized for walking in the street rather than telling the officer he was going to continue in the street.
  6. Michael Brown could have made a better choice in friends.  Someone who might have said something like “come on man, let’s just get up on the sidewalk” or “what the heck are you doing, it’s not right to steal, put those cigars back.”
  7. Michael Brown could have chosen not to assault Officer Warren in his car.
  8. Michael Brown could have not raised the situation to a life threatening situation by attempted to take Officer Warren’s gun.
  9. Michael Brown’s family could have apologized for his behavior and actions.
  10. Michael Brown’s cultural leaders, the same people planning protests with the President, could have said enough to this racial divide crap.  They could have advised their community to mourn their loss, and then get on with raising their children to be law biding (and might I add God fearing) citizens so that this never happens again.
  11. BONUS – Don’t do drugs!

But none of these things happened, did they?  No, and that is in part why Michael Brown is dead and Ferguson, MO is staring down the barrel of another riot/protest.

Now is the time for a truly post racial President to emerge.
