Like the way things look?

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

If you are reading this on April 9th 2008, then this is the way a blog looks with out the benefit of cascading style sheets (CSS). It is Annual CSS Naked Day and while I am fully clothed, Wally Wonders Why is not. CSS is a system that overlays style and design on top of the basic text that you see here. The basic text is always there allowing access for the disabled as well as search engines. This is what websites used to look like in the old days, back when Al Gore first invented the internet. Enjoy, it’s like a book as opposed to TV.

Local global warming research

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

I think I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. Why won’t local media report the research of our own Don J. Easterbrook? Is it anti-Bellingham? Is it anti-Whatcom? Is it anti-WWU? Perhaps it is if you consider the state of local politics, but it is also sound thinking by a local professor on a subject that Former Vice President Al Gore, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), most Democrats and mainstream media say is one of the most important issues facing the world today. Global Warming!

I have a vague recollection of a blurb somewhere announcing that Professor Easterbrook was going to speak at the NW Business club a few weeks ago. I worked and didn’t go the May 9th presentation, but I really did expect to read something about it in the news. I still haven’t seen any follow up stories. Where is the big front page article? Is there no room for facts and sound science in political arena of global warming?

Perhaps someone who attended the NW Business Club meeting could write to the Herald? Perhaps someone who attended could write a story for the Herald? Perhaps someone who attended could email me their thoughts regarding his presentation and I’ll post it here.

Or you could just spread the word about his research that is generously available on his website Don J. Easterbrook.

Ego-Offsets

Monday, March 26th, 2007

Some people have such a huge egos that they need to balance things out by purchasing “Ego-Offsets” It’s a way of spending money on things that make it look like you care about something other than yourself.

WWU to curb its emissons
BELLINGHAM — Western Washington University is pledging to curb greenhouse gas emissions and fight global warming, as part of a national college environmental campaign.

WWU President Karen Morse recently signed a letter of intent for the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, which is an effort to address global warming by getting institutions to commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions…

The purest form of Ego-Offsets; the president gets her ego fed; everyone at the college with an ego gets their ego fed; Bellingham gets it’s ego fed; everyone believes it is done for our children who will inherit our planet not someones ego; taxpayers purchase the offsets; and facts, which usually are sparse around egos, are thrown to the wind.

Criticisms of Mr. Gore have come not only from conservative groups and prominent skeptics of catastrophic warming, but also from rank-and-file scientists like Dr. Easterbook, who told his peers that he had no political ax to grind. A few see natural variation as more central to global warming than heat-trapping gases. NY Times

Why would the president of WWU listen to Former Vice President Al Gore’s inconvenient truth rather than Western’s own Professor Easterbrook? Ego!

So in a sense Carbon-Offsets are really a form of Ego-Offsets. Some humble person in Kenya is paid to plant a tree so that the purchaser of the Ego-Offset can draw attention to themselves while they spout about how they care about our world.
